Historical Context

Design 166, designated Aurora & Brisa, emerged from A. Mylne & Co.'s drawing office in 1909, during the early phase of the firm's expanding portfolio of small cruising yachts. By the time Midi was built in 1927, this design had proven its utility and had attracted multiple builds. The Mylne office, founded in 1896, maintained a prolific output of designs across all classes and purposes throughout the 1920s and 1930s. The commissioning of Midi by Dutch builders underscores the reputation A. Mylne & Co. had established among European yacht-building yards. Dutch yards such as G de Vries Lentsch Jr. were themselves renowned for the quality of their construction and often undertook commissions based on designs from recognised Scottish and British offices. Midi's modest size and straightforward design reflect the pragmatic approach Mylne adopted towards cruising vessels intended for amateur ownership and modest budgets.
