Historical Context

A. Mylne & Co. began operations in 1896 and by 1909 had established a substantial practice designing vessels ranging from small cruisers to larger yachts. Design 167, which became Aline, falls within the office's early period of productive output. Bute, an island in the Firth of Clyde, had a long tradition of small shipbuilding and was home to several builders working to plans from leading Scottish design offices. A Malcolm's construction of Aline exemplifies the practical collaboration between designers and regional builders that characterised yacht construction in Edwardian Scotland.
